Surrey homicide case escalates as charge upgraded to second-degree murder. Police confirm no gang link; suspect remains in custody.
Late-Night Shooting Shocks Surrey Neighbourhood
A quiet Surrey neighbourhood was shaken early Sunday morning when gunfire rang out along Laurel Drive near 139th Street. Shortly after 1:40 a.m., officers with the Surrey Police Service rushed to the scene following reports of shots fired.
Inside a home, they discovered a 29-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the rapid response, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charge Escalated as Investigation Deepens
At first, the suspect — also 29 — faced a manslaughter charge. However, as investigators gathered more evidence, the situation shifted. On Friday, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team confirmed the charge had been upgraded to second-degree murder.
According to Sgt. Freda Fong, the change reflects ongoing investigative work. She noted that the upgrade came after close collaboration between IHIT and its policing partners.
Suspect Remains in Custody
Meanwhile, the accused appeared in court Friday morning and remains behind bars. Authorities have not released further details about the events leading up to the shooting.
No Links to Gang Activity, Police Say
Although violent incidents in the region often raise concerns about organized crime, investigators moved quickly to address those fears. Earlier in the week, IHIT confirmed the case does not appear to be connected to gang activity or extortion.
That clarification, while reassuring, leaves many questions unanswered for the community.
Community Awaits Answers
For now, residents in Surrey are left processing what happened in their neighbourhood. As the investigation continues, police are expected to provide updates when new information becomes available.
In the meantime, the upgraded charge signals a serious turn in the case — and a step closer to understanding what led to the deadly shooting.
