A late-night shooting in Surrey damaged a home and car. Police say it appears linked to extortion, as cases rise across B.C.’s Lower Mainland.
A Quiet Night Shattered in Panorama Ridge
Just after midnight, calm broke in Surrey’s Panorama Ridge neighbourhood. Shots rang out near a family home. While the scene looked alarming, police quickly confirmed one key detail: no one was hurt.
Still, the message behind the gunfire raised concern across the city.
What Police Found at the Scene
At about 12:50 a.m. PT on Thursday, Surrey Police Service officers rushed to the 13400 block of 56 Avenue. When they arrived, they found damage to a residence and a nearby vehicle.
Although investigators continue to examine the evidence, police say the shooting appears tied to extortion. As a result, the case now falls under the Surrey Police Service major crimes section.
A Pattern That Is Hard to Ignore
This incident did not happen in isolation. In fact, it came less than 24 hours after another shooting targeted a business on King George Boulevard. Police believe that case was also linked to extortion.
Because of these back-to-back events, fears are growing that organized threats continue to escalate across the Lower Mainland.
Extortion on the Rise Across Communities
Extortion has become a serious issue in Surrey, Abbotsford, and Delta. Many victims come from South Asian communities, where threats and money demands have surged.
In Surrey alone, police recorded 132 extortion attempts in 2025. Nearly half involved gunfire aimed at homes or businesses. Meanwhile, 2026 has already seen 16 reported cases, and the year is still young.
Who May Be Behind the Threats
The RCMP has linked some extortion threats to the India-based Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Although not every case connects to the same group, investigators say organized crime plays a growing role.
Because of this risk, the province launched a 40-member extortion task force in 2025. The unit includes RCMP officers and members from municipal forces in Surrey, Abbotsford, and Delta.
Police Ask the Public for Help
As the investigation continues, police urge anyone with information to come forward. CCTV footage, dashcam video, or even small details could help move the case forward.
For now, residents remain shaken but relieved that no injuries occurred. Even so, the shooting serves as another reminder that extortion remains a pressing concern in B.C.’s Lower Mainland.
