Gunfire linked to extortion hits Surrey. Experts warn of rising risks, possible foreign influence, and threats to the wider community.

Gunfire in Surrey Raises Alarm Over Extortion Violence

Early Saturday morning, a quiet Surrey neighborhood was jolted by gunfire outside a home on Galway Crescent. Police say the shooting, which occurred around 2:20 a.m., left property damaged but no one injured. Investigators suspect the incident is tied to an ongoing extortion campaign, and the city’s major crime unit has taken over the case.

This latest episode is part of a troubling pattern of extortion-linked shootings in Surrey, raising concern among residents and law enforcement alike.

Organized Crime or Something More?

Wade Diceman, a criminology professor at the University of the Fraser Valley, weighed in on the situation, highlighting a deeper concern: could this violence signal more than gang activity?

“The key question is whether this is purely gang-driven extortion or if foreign interference is at play,” Diceman explained. He referenced RCMP intelligence suggesting possible links between the Bishnoi gang and the Indian government, noting that while evidence isn’t conclusive, it’s compelling enough to reshape how authorities approach these crimes.

Impact on the Indo-Canadian Community

Diceman emphasized that the violence isn’t limited to politically active individuals. “Everyday members of the Indo-Canadian community, particularly those running successful businesses, are being targeted,” he said. He also pointed to online videos that appear designed to intimidate communities, warning that the threat could escalate into a broader public safety crisis.

“This isn’t just a community issue—it’s a Canadian issue,” he added, urging a national-level response rather than treating it as an isolated problem.

Police Call for Public Assistance

Surrey police say the investigation is in its early stages. Authorities are asking anyone with information—such as CCTV or dashcam footage—to come forward through Crime Stoppers or local police contacts.

As Surrey grapples with rising extortion-linked violence, both experts and law enforcement warn that the city—and potentially the wider region—could face serious safety challenges if the trend continues.
