Surrey Schools Urgently Seeking Crossing Guards
Are your mornings free? How about afternoons? Surrey Schools is on the lookout for enthusiastic crossing guards to help elementary students navigate busy streets safely. Schools in high-traffic areas, like White Rock Elementary, are in particular need as the city’s population continues to grow.
Currently, the district has 38 crossing guards serving 37 schools, but demand is rising fast. Twelve elementary schools are already on a waiting list for these safety heroes—and the list keeps growing.
Safety First: Why Crossing Guards Matter
“Traffic is heavier than ever, and many school crossings are high-volume,” said Adam Jaffer, Surrey Schools’ assistant secretary-treasurer. “If kids only need to cross quiet side streets, it’s easier. But main roads? That’s where a crossing guard makes all the difference.”
Crossing guards not only ensure students’ safety but also bring energy and personality to the school day. Jaffer emphasizes that Surrey Schools seeks community-minded individuals who enjoy interacting with students and can commit to regular morning and afternoon shifts.
How to Join the Team
The district partners with the Frontiersmen of the Commonwealth to recruit new crossing guards. Once accepted, candidates receive a uniform and become official members, ready to guide children safely across busy streets.
Applicants should have access to a vehicle, as some schools in need may be outside their immediate neighborhood. Interested individuals can apply and submit their contact information directly on the Surrey Schools website.
With growing traffic and more schools requesting help, there’s never been a better time to become a community hero and make a tangible difference for Surrey and White Rock students.
