Softball Association Earns Top Provincial Honour

The South Surrey White Rock Minor Softball Association has been recognized by Softball BC as its Large Association of the Year. The award comes during SSWRMSA’s 30th anniversary season.

SSWRMSA president Thomas Bell said the honour reflects the collective work of volunteers, families, coaches and athletes. He credited their dedication, and noted that without their support the recognition would not be possible.

Why the Honour Growth, Programming, Community Impact

Softball BC pointed to several achievements in awarding SSWRMSA the title:

  • A major investment by the City of Surrey into renovations at Sunnyside Park, providing upgraded fields for players.
  • A broad offering of programming including hundreds of clinics, year-round training and an expanded U11 Skills Academy and Thunder Select Development Program.
  • Over 650 registrations across camps and clinics.
  • Strong partnerships with local associations that widened access and created more opportunities for players of all ages.

SSWRMSA at a Glance Inclusive, Community-Driven, Competitive

The association is volunteer run and offers programs for athletes from as young as five years old up through adult leagues. It provides both recreational and competitive (“rep”) level play, focusing on development, inclusion and community spirit.

Recent seasons have seen success at multiple levels including youth and adult competition. For example their Women’s “Thunder” team won gold at the 2025 provincial championships.

Some of their youth teams also posted strong performances in district tournaments, reflecting the strength of coaching and grassroots investment in player development.

What This Means for Surrey and the Community

For the South Surrey and White Rock communities this award highlights the value of sport as a unifying force. It showcases how volunteer-led grassroots organizations can succeed at high levels while offering inclusive, accessible sport for all ages.

For young athletes, SSWRMSA’s recognition might boost pride, deepen engagement, and encourage more participation. Their success shows that commitment to development, teamwork and community support can translate into tangible results.

For the region’s sport infrastructure, the ongoing upgrades at Sunnyside Park supporting SSWRMSA and other leagues signal investment in long-term growth, better facilities, and more opportunities for local families.
