Multi-agency police arrest suspect after Massey Tunnel traffic chaos; no shots fired, damage caused with a hammer.

Traffic Chaos Erupts at Massey Tunnel

Delta commuters faced major delays Saturday morning as a police incident unfolded inside and around the Massey Tunnel. The multi-agency response snarled traffic for hours, leaving drivers frustrated but safe.

Multi-Agency Response in Action

Around 10:20 a.m., Surrey Police Services responded to reports of “shots fired” at a business on the 13500 block of King George Boulevard. Witnesses said a suspect quickly fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting an immediate alert to surrounding police units.

S/Sgt. Lindsey Houghton, senior media relations officer for Surrey Police Services, explained that Richmond RCMP and Delta police joined the pursuit. A police helicopter tracked the vehicle as it entered Richmond, ultimately leading to the suspect’s arrest at approximately 11:12 a.m.

No Gunfire, Just a Hammer

Although initial reports suggested a shooting, officers later confirmed that the incident involved no firearms. Instead, the suspect had used a hammer to damage the business’s window. Thankfully, no one was injured during the event.

Commuters Urged to Stay Patient

The incident highlighted the speed and coordination of local law enforcement. While traffic congestion persisted, police urged drivers to remain patient and follow detours. The swift resolution ensured public safety and prevented further disruption.

Quick Arrest Brings Closure

By late Saturday, authorities confirmed the suspect was in custody and the situation fully contained. The investigation continues, but police praised the cooperation between Surrey Police, Richmond RCMP, Delta Police, and aerial support from the RCMP helicopter, noting that teamwork helped bring the incident to a rapid conclusion.
