Schools in Tumbler Ridge Prepare to Reopen After Shooting
Tumbler Ridge, B.C. Schools in Tumbler Ridge are preparing to welcome students back next week after being closed for several days following last week’s deadly shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence.
School and community leaders say the decision to resume in-person instruction comes with supports in place to help families and staff as they transition back.
Closure Followed Deadly Incident
The temporary closure came after a fatal mass shooting on Feb. 10, 2026, in which nine people were killed and several others injured, including students and staff. The suspect was found dead inside the school, and police declared the incident contained later that same day. The tragedy deeply affected the tight-knit community.
In the days that followed, students remained home as counselling and crisis support were offered while officials planned a safe return.
Return Date and Safety Supports
School district officials say classes will resume on Monday, giving families a weekend to prepare. While the building itself is part of the district’s regular cleaning and safety checks, the focus is also on mental health resources for students, staff and caregivers who were impacted by the events.
“We want to make sure everyone feels supported and safe when they come back,” a school official said in a public update. Counsellors and support workers will be available on site to help students manage emotions, anxiety or stress.

In the lead-up to reopening, the school board confirmed that additional support teams including psychologists and youth support workers will be at the schools to assist those who need someone to talk to.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to reach out if their children need extra support during the transition back to the classroom.
