Two Arrested After Suspected Shots Fired in Surrey
Two men are facing criminal charges following an early-morning Surrey Police Service investigation that led officers to a loaded handgun and a suspect vehicle, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
The arrests stem from a proactive overnight patrol tied to ongoing efforts to curb extortion-related violence in the city.
Officers Hear Suspected Gunshot During Patrol
Police say the incident unfolded around 3:50 a.m. on January 26, when officers assigned to Project Assurance were patrolling near 129 Street and 84 Avenue. While in the area, officers heard what they believed to be a gunshot.
Moments later, police located a nearby vehicle linked to the sound and conducted a traffic stop. The driver and a passenger were taken into custody without incident.
Loaded Handgun Seized
During the arrests, officers discovered and seized a loaded handgun from the vehicle. The Surrey Police Service’s Major Crime Section assumed conduct of the investigation shortly after, citing the seriousness of the offence and its potential connection to broader extortion-related activity in the city.
Project Assurance was launched to increase police visibility in neighbourhoods and commercial areas that have been targeted by extortion threats and shootings.
Criminal Charges Laid
Harshdeep Singh, 20, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and occupying a vehicle while knowing a firearm was present.
Hanspreet Singh, 21, faces one count of occupying a vehicle while knowing a firearm was present.
Both men were remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear in court on January 30.
Border Agency Notified
Police confirmed both accused are foreign nationals and that the Canada Border Services Agency has been notified as part of the ongoing process.
Investigators say the case remains active and additional charges could be approved as the investigation continues.
Police Appeal for Public Help
Surrey Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam or CCTV footage from the area around the time of the arrests to come forward. Tips can be submitted to police by quoting the investigation file number.
Authorities say community cooperation remains a key part of addressing firearm-related offences and extortion-linked crime across Surrey.
