Crowd Turns Out in Big Numbers for Iran Solidarity March
Thousands filled downtown Vancouver on Sunday to stand with people in Iran who are risking everything in protests against their government. The crowd gathered at the Vancouver Art Gallery before moving through nearby streets, chanting and waving symbols that represent freedom and solidarity.
Participants repeatedly stressed their desire to keep global attention on Iran’s growing humanitarian crisis and to honour protesters who have faced violent crackdowns back home.
Voices of Loss, Calls for Change
Demonstrators carried flags and photos of missing or deceased relatives, sharing personal stories about family members lost in Iran’s unrest. One protester, Sahand Jamshidi, said his cousin was killed during a protest, highlighting deep personal stakes for many in the crowd.
The massive turnout shows how far support extends beyond Iran, with diaspora communities mobilizing in cities globally as part of a broader 2026 wave of Iranian diaspora protests.
Unity and Messages in the Streets
As the march moved through the heart of the city, voices calling for “freedom” and “regime change” were heard amid chants and raised signs. Many supporters carried the lion-and-sun flag, a symbol that is banned within Iran but embraced by the diaspora as a representation of resistance.
Protesters emphasized that while the rallies are peaceful, their message is urgent: they want the world to know about the struggles inside Iran and to press for reforms that protect basic human rights.
Part of a Wider Global Movement
Vancouver’s demonstration was one of many held recently in support of Iranians at home. Similar protests took place across Canada and other countries as diaspora communities unite in solidarity with those facing internet blackouts and violent suppression in Iran.
This global movement reflects sustained international concern and growing pressure for worldwide attention to Iran’s internal conflict and demands for change.
