Two Vancouver teens face assault charges after a stabbing at a high school basketball game, with the victim now recovering from surgery.
Teen Stabbing Shakes Vancouver High School Basketball Game
Vancouver’s high school sports community is reeling after a stabbing at a basketball game last month. The BC Prosecution Service has charged two teens following the violent incident, which occurred during a match between Eric Hamber Secondary and Killarney Secondary on February 2.
An 18-year-old player was stabbed in the arm during a post-game fight. He was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but has since been released and is recovering after surgery, according to Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Sgt. Adam Donaldson.
Schools Respond to Violence
The principal of Eric Hamber Secondary, Jason Lauzon, shared that the school is actively reviewing the incident. “If students are confirmed to be involved, school-level actions will reflect our focus on safety and respectful behaviour,” Lauzon stated in a letter obtained by 1130 NewsRadio.
While the exact motive remains unclear, VPD Sgt. Steve Addison explained that tensions flared during a “high-stakes game with playoff implications” between the two schools.
Charges Filed Against Two Teens
Police confirmed Thursday that charges have been approved for a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old. The older teen faces aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The younger teen is charged with assault with a weapon. Both have been released under court-ordered conditions.
Several arrests were made in the days following the February 2 fight, as police worked to prevent further incidents and ensure student safety.
