Surrey’s school board re-elects Gary Tymoschuk as chair and appoints Garry Thind as vice-chair, marking another year of steady leadership.
Surrey’s Leadership Stays the Course
Surrey’s Board of Education has voted to keep its leadership team in place for another year, and the decision came with plenty of confidence. During the Nov. 12 public board meeting, trustees re-elected Gary Tymoschuk as board chair. At the same meeting, Garry Thind stepped into the role of vice-chair, a term set to run through Nov. 30, 2026.
Trustees Express Confidence in the Year Ahead
Right after the vote, Tymoschuk shared his gratitude. He said he appreciated the trust of his fellow trustees and emphasized his commitment to serving the district well. And as the board moves ahead, he noted that the focus remains firmly on students, schools, and the community.
Meanwhile, Thind begins his new role after succeeding trustee Terry Allen. Allen previously served as vice-chair in both 2024–2025 and 2017–2022. Tymoschuk, for his part, took over the chair position last year after Laurie Larsen’s long term, which began back in 2017.
A Board Serving Thousands Across the District
The current Board of Education was sworn in after B.C.’s 2022 general local elections. Today, the board oversees more than 131 schools, supporting students from kindergarten through Grade 12 across Surrey and White Rock. The district is also home to over 13,000 employees, all working together to support learning at every level.
Monthly Meetings Open to the Public
Public board meetings are held once a month at 7 p.m. at the District Education Centre on 92 Avenue. The next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 10. For anyone who wants to stay informed, the Surrey Schools website posts meeting dates, agendas, minutes, videos, and livestream links on the day of each meeting.
By keeping an experienced leadership team in place, the board hopes to continue a steady path forward one that supports students, families, and staff across the district.
