A massive swarm of harbour seals is delighting visitors at White Rock Pier, creating unforgettable wildlife moments and drawing crowds to the waterfront.
Nature Steals the Spotlight
The holiday lights may not be shining at White Rock Pier yet, but something even brighter is lighting up people’s spirits harbour seals! Visitors have been spotting an incredible swarm of seals gliding through the water, and excitement is building every single day.
People are sharing photos, posting videos, chatting in community groups and, of course, heading to the pier just to catch a glimpse. Some locals say they’ve seen 100 to 200 harbour seals gathering near the shoreline. That number sounds unbelievable until you see it yourself.
A Rare Morning Surprise
Earlier this week, longtime resident Linda Crabtree took her usual early-morning walk along the pier. First, she noticed something unusual: countless seagulls diving again and again into the water. Curious, she looked closer and saw why. Just below the surface swam a huge abundance of anchovies and herring, and the seals were clearly enjoying the feast.
She spotted a few seals at first. Some floated calmly. Some napped. All looked peaceful. Then she reached the end of the pier and everything changed. Over a hundred seals moved together like a single wave. She said it looked as though the seals were stitched into the sea. It was calm. It was graceful. It was unforgettable.
Wildlife Wonders Return
Locals say they’ve only seen a spectacle like this three times in 50 years. That makes this moment even more special. According to naturalist Carlo Giovanella, a similar marine surge happened in 2019 and lasted for weeks. That event also began with a sudden arrival of anchovies, which lured seals, birds and sea lions into the bay. He wonders if this year will offer a repeat and many residents are hoping the answer is yes.
Want to See Them Yourself?
The seals aren’t shy. They’re close to the pier. They’re playful. They’re peaceful. They’re perfect for unforgettable photos. So, if you’re nearby, take a stroll, watch the water and keep your camera ready. You might even see the seals gliding together through the water like a single gentle wave.
