Experience The Nutcracker in Surrey this weekend with four festive daytime shows by Royal City Youth Ballet. Enjoy music, magic and holiday tradition.

Holiday Ballet Returns With Daytime Shows

Surrey is in for a bright burst of holiday cheer this weekend. The Royal City Youth Ballet is back at Surrey Arts Centre with four daytime performances of The Nutcracker. Shows run Saturday and Sunday, with start times at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The company enters its 37th year of bringing this classic to local stages, and fans can feel the excitement build as the season begins.

A Full-Length Ballet With a Huge Cast

The show features more than 100 dancers. Keitha Campeau leads the production with energy and heart. Because of this, the stage comes alive with colour, movement and joyful detail. And since families love an afternoon performance, these early showtimes offer an easy way to enjoy the magic without the late-night rush.

Tchaikovsky, Dazzling Sets and Holiday Wonder

The experience shines with Tchaikovsky’s timeless score. Jean Claude Olivier created the sets, and Chris Sinosich designed the bright, festive costumes. Together, these details create a warm holiday world. Moreover, the story feels both classic and fresh as Clara begins her unforgettable dream.

A Story Filled With Dreams and Adventure

It all begins on Christmas Eve. Clara receives a Nutcracker soldier from her mysterious godfather, Drosselmeyer. After the party ends, she falls asleep while holding her new gift. Then the dream sweeps her into a thrilling battle, a snowy forest and a sweet, sparkling kingdom. She meets the Sugar Plum Fairy. She meets dancers from faraway lands. She sees magic everywhere she turns. At last, Drosselmeyer brings her home again. Clara wakes with her Nutcracker still in her arms and a dream she will never forget.

Training Future Stars Since 1989

Royal City Youth Ballet has offered young dancers major performance opportunities since 1989. Students train weekly at their own dance schools. Additionally, they gather for company classes and rehearsals for full-length productions such as The Nutcracker, Cinderella and Coppélia. Because of this structure, dancers grow with steady guidance and broad artistic exposure.

More Nutcracker Events on the Way

Surrey Arts Centre also hosts “The Story of the Nutcracker” this Tuesday, Dec. 9. The Ballet Room presents this event, and tickets remain limited. Meanwhile, Vancouver audiences can enjoy Goh Ballet’s beloved production at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre from Dec. 18 to 21. It features Surrey dancers Anna Li and Irene Cheliubeeva, who bring fresh talent and bright energy to the stage.
