Surrey’s SASSY Awards celebrate young leaders who drive change, inspire hope, and support their community with courage and heart.
A Night Filled With Energy and Heart
The 15th annual Service Above Self Surrey Youth (SASSY) Awards lit up Surrey City Hall last week with stories of courage, kindness, and community spirit. These awards, created by the Semiahmoo Rotary Club and supported by the City of Surrey, highlight young people who push forward with purpose and help others along the way.
Celebrating Leadership in Every Form
This year, the spotlight stretched across four powerful categories:
- Community Leadership and Service
- Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
- Leadership and Service Beyond Adversity
- School Leadership and Service
Because the event keeps growing, each category now includes both Junior (under 16) and Senior (17 and older) divisions. With this change, twenty incredible youth walked away as award recipients.
Words That Inspired the Room
Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke shared warm praise for the winners. She explained how their courage, energy, and steady drive offer real hope for the future. She thanked each young leader for shaping a brighter city and encouraging others to take action as well.
Awards That Spark More Good
Each winner received a cash prize, a SASSY trophy, and a donation to give to a charity they believe in. Runners-up also earned cash awards and charitable donations, which helped keep the spirit of giving strong throughout the evening.

Support That Reaches Far Beyond the Event
Proceeds from the celebration fuel Rotary youth programs such as Interact and Rotaract. These programs guide young people as they build and lead projects both locally and globally. When extra funds remain, they power special youth initiatives in the community and help future SASSY Awards grow even stronger.
