A 12-year-old Surrey ballerina lands her dream role as Clara in Goh Ballet’s Nutcracker, stepping into the spotlight on Vancouver’s biggest stage.
A Dream Role Takes Center Stage
Every young ballerina dreams big. And this December, that dream comes true for Irene Cheliubeeva. She is just 12. Yet she now dances as Clara in The Nutcracker. And she does so on one of Vancouver’s grandest stages.
From Dec. 18 to 21, Irene performs with Goh Ballet at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. As a result, she steps into the spotlight with confidence, joy, and heart.
From Small Roles to a Star Moment
Irene knows this stage well. Over the years, she danced as a Small Party Girl and a Tall Party Girl. She also filled other supporting roles. However, this year feels different.
“This year I am so happy to be Clara,” she said. “I feel grateful, excited, and responsible all at once.”
Because of steady work and strong focus, Irene earned her place. She trains in Goh Ballet’s pre-professional Jewel Program. Therefore, she spends many hours refining her craft.
A Family Effort Fueled by Love
Behind every young dancer stands a strong family. In Irene’s case, her mom, Tamara, leads the way. She drives from Surrey to Vancouver for rehearsals. She also helps with homework in the car.
Still, the busy days feel worth it.
“Irene’s life changed,” Tamara said. “There are shows, rehearsals, and long drives. But she loves it all. She is ready to live at Goh.”
Above all, Tamara loves seeing her daughter shine on stage.
A Nutcracker Like No Other
Now in its 15th year, Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker fills the stage with magic. More than 250 performers take part. Together, they bring bold dance, rich costumes, and classic music to life.
Notably, this show features a live orchestra. The Vancouver Opera Orchestra plays Tchaikovsky’s score. In addition, guest artists from around the world join the cast. Leslie Dala directs the production.
As a result, audiences see Clara’s dream unfold. She travels through snow. She crosses the Lemonade Sea. She reaches the Kingdom of Sweets. Along the way, the Nutcracker battles the Mouse King.
Loving Every Magical Moment
Irene started dancing at age three. Since then, her love for ballet has grown. At first, applause mattered most. Now, technique and teamwork matter more.
“There’s so much magic on stage,” she said. “In the battle scene, I throw my shoe at the Mouse King. It’s funny. And the snow scene feels amazing.”
Yes, the snow does fall. And yes, it feels real.
The Magic Starts Before the Curtain Rises
The experience begins early at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Before the show, families enjoy music, dancing, and photo moments in the lobby. Mother Ginger greets guests. Holiday songs fill the air.
“Every year we find new ways to spark imagination,” said Chan Hon Goh, executive producer and artistic director. “The magic starts the moment you arrive.”

A Star Is Just Getting Started
For Irene, this role means more than a title. It marks a milestone. It also signals what may come next.
For now, though, she dances. She smiles. And she lives her dream one graceful step at a time.
