Surrey Police Service has confirmed a fatal crash involving one of its patrol vehicles and a pedestrian. SPS notifies IIO of police-involved collision whenever someone is seriously hurt or killed in an incident linked to officers, and that step has now been taken.

According to SPS, the collision happened around 6 a.m. on December 25 in the 10800 block of 132 Street. An SPS vehicle struck an adult woman who was walking in the area.

Woman dies after being rushed to hospital

Officers and Surrey Fire Service crews gave first aid until BC Emergency Health Services arrived. Paramedics then took the woman to hospital with life‑threatening injuries.

Despite efforts from police, firefighters, paramedics and medical staff, she later died. Authorities have not yet released her name.

Police watchdog takes over investigation

SPS notifies IIO of police-involved collision cases so an independent civilian body can decide what happened and whether any officer committed an offence. In this case, the Independent Investigations Office has asserted jurisdiction.

Because the IIO is now in charge, SPS says it cannot share further details while the watchdog conducts its investigation. The service does not expect any road closures related to this incident.

Media inquiries are being directed to SPS media relations officer Sgt. Tige Pollock at 236‑877‑7446 or by email at media@surreypolice.ca.
