Late-night patrols in Surrey lead to swift arrests after a gunshot rings out. Police seize a loaded handgun and lay charges as the probe continues.
Gunshot Breaks the Quiet Before Dawn
Early Monday, while most of Surrey slept, a sharp sound cut through the silence. At about 3:50 a.m., officers on proactive patrol heard what they believed was a gunshot near 129th Street and 84th Avenue. Because of recent extortion-linked violence, police already worked the area closely. As a result, they moved fast.
Quick Stop, Faster Arrests
Moments later, officers spotted a vehicle nearby. Then, they pulled it over. Next, they arrested both the driver and a passenger. According to police, the response unfolded within minutes. Therefore, the situation did not escalate.
Loaded Handgun Found
During the arrest, officers searched the vehicle. As they did, they found a loaded handgun and seized it. “During the arrests, a loaded handgun was discovered and seized,” said Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton in a Tuesday news release. Consequently, the case shifted quickly.
Major Crime Unit Takes Over
Soon after, the major crime section assumed control of the investigation. Following that step, prosecutors approved charges against two men. The move signals how seriously police view the incident, especially given the recent pattern of shootings tied to extortion.
Charges Laid Against Two Men
Police identified the accused as Harshdeep Singh, 20, and Hanspreet Singh, 21. Harshdeep Singh faces two charges: dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and occupying a vehicle while knowing a firearm was present. Meanwhile, Hanspreet Singh faces one charge for occupying a vehicle while knowing a firearm was present.
Custody and Border Agency Notified
For now, both men remain in custody until Friday. Because they are foreign nationals, Surrey Police contacted the Canada Border Services Agency. Therefore, immigration matters may follow alongside the criminal case.
Investigation Still Active
Even so, the work is not done. Police say the investigation continues, and more charges could follow. As a result, officers ask the public to help.
