Federal government invites public input to address physical and mental health challenges facing men and boys
The Government of Canada has launched a nationwide consultation aimed at developing the country’s first federal strategy focused specifically on the health of men and boys.
Health Canada announced that it is seeking input from Canadians, health professionals, community organizations and advocacy groups to help shape a comprehensive approach to improving physical, mental and social well-being among men across all stages of life.
Officials say the initiative recognizes that men in Canada face distinct health challenges. National data shows men are more likely to die by suicide, experience substance-related harms and avoid preventive health care compared to women. Health experts have long argued that targeted strategies are needed to address these disparities and improve long-term outcomes.
The consultation period is open until June 1, 2026, and will inform the development of a federal framework expected to be released later this year.
According to Health Canada, the strategy will aim to strengthen early intervention, improve access to care, and encourage more proactive engagement with health services. The government is also looking at broader social factors that affect well-being, including employment pressures, stigma around mental health and community support systems.
Public health advocates note that while Canada has previously introduced initiatives addressing specific issues such as mental health and substance use, this marks the first coordinated federal effort focused specifically on men’s health.
Residents are encouraged to participate through the online consultation portal and share their perspectives on what priorities should be included in the national strategy.
For Surrey and other growing communities across British Columbia, local health providers say conversations around men’s mental health, access to primary care and prevention remain especially relevant as populations continue to expand.
More information and consultation details are available through Health Canada’s official website.
