Close Call for Family on Mission Forest Service Road
A family driving along Lost Creek Forest Service Road near Mission, British Columbia, recently experienced a terrifying moment when a stray bullet entered their vehicle. According to local authorities, the projectile came through an open window and landed inside a child’s car seat.
Fortunately, no one inside the SUV was injured, but the situation could have easily turned tragic.
Gunfire Heard Before Impact
The family reported hearing gunshots in the surrounding area prior to the incident. However, it wasn’t until the driver noticed a sudden noise inside the vehicle that they realized something had struck the interior.
Police say no suspects have been identified, and it remains unclear who fired the shot.
Illegal Shooting a Growing Concern in Mission
Law enforcement agencies, including Mission RCMP and the BC Conservation Officer Service, say incidents involving unsafe firearm use in backcountry areas are becoming increasingly common.
Officials note that many of these cases involve visitors from outside the local community who may not be familiar with regulations or safe shooting practices.
Understanding Shooting Restrictions in the Area
Authorities are reminding the public that firearm use is heavily restricted near Forest Service Roads (FSRs). In many parts of the Fraser Valley, discharging a firearm within 400 metres of these roads is prohibited.
Because most accessible areas fall within this restricted zone, shooting near roadsides is often illegal.
Serious Penalties for Violators
Those caught violating firearm regulations could face significant consequences, including:
- Fines under provincial wildlife laws
- Confiscation of firearms
- Suspension or loss of firearms licenses
- Potential criminal charges
Increased Patrols and Public Safety Measures
In response to ongoing concerns, officials say patrols in Mission’s backcountry will be stepped up. Authorities are urging gun owners to educate themselves on legal shooting zones and prioritize safety at all times.
Anyone witnessing unsafe or illegal firearm activity is encouraged to report it immediately.
