What to Expect at Vancouver Sun Run 2026

Vancouver is gearing up for one of its biggest annual running events as the Sun Run returns this Sunday, April 19. The event attracts thousands of participants across multiple race categories, making it one of the largest road races in Canada.

From competitive runners to families and youth teams, the event offers several options including a 10-km run, walking divisions, youth challenges, and a shorter mini run.

Sun Run Start Times

Participants should be aware of staggered start times for different races:

  • Mini Sun Run (2.5 km): Starts at 8:00 a.m. near BC Place Stadium
  • Wheelchair Race: Begins at 8:50 a.m.
  • Main 10-km Race: Kicks off at 9:00 a.m. from Georgia and Burrard

Arriving early is highly recommended to avoid delays and ensure a smooth start.

Route Overview

The 10-km race takes runners through some of Vancouver’s most scenic areas. The route begins downtown, moves through the West End toward English Bay, and continues along the waterfront via Beach and Pacific avenues.

Runners will then cross the Burrard Bridge, pass through South False Creek and Mount Pleasant, and finish near BC Place Stadium.

Mini Sun Run for Families

The Mini Sun Run offers a shorter 2.5-km course, perfect for families and beginner participants. Young children are encouraged to be accompanied by an adult for safety.

Major Road Closures to Expect

Drivers should prepare for significant traffic disruptions throughout the city. Road closures will begin as early as 5:00 a.m. and continue until approximately 1:30 p.m. or later.

Key Affected Areas:

  • Downtown & West End: Georgia Street, Denman Street, Beach Avenue, Pacific Street
  • Burrard Bridge: Fully closed during race hours
  • Kitsilano & Fairview: W 3rd, 4th, and 6th Avenues
  • False Creek & BC Place Area: Pacific Boulevard, Quebec Street, Expo Boulevard

Expect restricted access and detours across these areas during the event.

Best Ways to Get Around

Organizers strongly recommend using public transit to avoid traffic congestion. SkyTrain stations like Burrard and Granville offer convenient access to the starting line.

If driving is necessary, parking near the finish area at BC Place may be the most practical option. However, expect limited availability and delays.

Plan Ahead for a Smooth Experience

Whether you’re participating or just traveling through the city, planning ahead is essential. Leave early, check transit updates, and allow extra time for your journey.

The Vancouver Sun Run is a celebration of fitness and community—but it also brings major changes to traffic across the city.
