The Province has unveiled plans to create 590 Surrey housing units and shelter spaces, aiming to address growing needs across the fast-expanding city.
The Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs confirmed the proposal Friday, highlighting a collaboration between the Province, BC Housing, and the City of Surrey. Minister Christine Boyle said the initiative reflects a commitment to ensuring people can find a home that matches their needs. “We’re helping people live near their jobs and families while connecting those in need to vital supports,” she said.
The plan includes three Surrey sites featuring affordable rentals, supportive housing, complex-care units, and shelter spaces. Each development is designed to meet different community needs.
Mayor Brenda Locke emphasized Surrey’s urgent need for housing. “Demand here is unlike anywhere else in the province,” she said. “Through partnership with the Province, we’re moving forward on safe, stable homes.”
All three projects require rezoning approval from the City of Surrey. If approved, detailed funding plans will be released closer to groundbreaking. Residents, businesses, and community members are encouraged to attend information sessions and provide feedback.
