Councillor Sean Orr raises nearly $35K in defamation lawsuit against Mayor Ken Sim after public allegations harm his reputation.

Sean Orr Turns to Crowdfunding After Mayor’s Alleged Defamation

Vancouver Councillor Sean Orr has taken an unusual step in his ongoing dispute with Mayor Ken Sim — he’s now crowdfunding his defamation lawsuit. In just a short time, Orr has raised nearly $35,000, asking the public to help cover legal costs.

“On February 6, Mayor Ken Sim made public statements about me that were false and damaging,” Orr wrote on his GoFundMe page. “Until now, Ken Sim has faced no consequences for these actions.”

The Allegations That Sparked the Lawsuit

The lawsuit stems from comments Sim reportedly made to Chinese media, claiming Orr was “handing out illegal drugs on Christmas Day to people on the streets.” ABC Councillor Lenny Zhou was involved in translating these statements.

Orr’s civil claim calls the statement “defamatory” and argues it was published or republished widely by Chinese media. Both Sim and Zhou have since issued apologies, but Orr says the damage was already done.

“Sim’s repeated attention to the defamatory statements, even while apologizing, has amplified the harm,” the lawsuit notes. “Subsequent comments by Sim have only worsened the impact on my reputation.”

Crowdfunding and Legal Costs

Orr’s GoFundMe page encourages donations, even small ones. He suggested $16, symbolically referencing the number of times Sim apologized. The initial goal of $35,000 has been raised and the target increased to $40,000 to cover legal fees and related expenses.

The page explains: “Defamation lawsuits can easily stretch into six figures. All funds go directly to lawyer fees and disbursements. No proceeds will be given to COPE.”

At the time of publication, more than 800 people had contributed.

Election-Year Tensions

The dispute unfolds against the backdrop of the upcoming Vancouver municipal election on October 17, 2026. Both Orr and Sim are running to retain their seats, making the lawsuit a highly visible chapter in an already tense campaign.

Mayor Sim’s office responded to requests for comment: “Mayor Sim is aware of the litigation filed by Councillor Orr. As this matter is now before the courts, the Mayor will not be commenting further.”

Orr has not provided additional statements to the media, leaving the focus on the legal proceedings and the ongoing crowdfunding effort.
