Surrey Police Share Safety Tips Ahead of 2026 Vaisakhi Parade

As Surrey prepares to host one of the largest Vaisakhi celebrations in the world, authorities are encouraging residents and visitors to plan ahead for a safe and enjoyable event.

The Khalsa Day Vaisakhi Parade, taking place on April 18, 2026, is expected to attract tens of thousands of attendees from across Metro Vancouver and beyond. Surrey Police Service (SPS), along with multiple regional law enforcement agencies, will be on-site to ensure public safety and manage traffic.

Large-Scale Safety Plan in Place

Police have developed a comprehensive safety strategy in coordination with the City of Surrey and event organizers. Officers from several Lower Mainland agencies—including Delta, Abbotsford, New Westminster, and Transit Police—will assist in crowd control, emergency response, and traffic management.

Specialized integrated units, including tactical teams and police dog services, will also be part of the operation to support a safe environment for all attendees.

Tips to Stay Safe During the Parade

With large crowds expected, officials are reminding families and groups to take precautions to avoid getting separated:

  • Take a group photo before arriving to help identify members if needed
  • Choose a designated meeting point in case someone gets lost
  • Ensure everyone carries identification
  • Keep children within sight at all times
  • Carry a recent photo of your child
  • Report missing persons immediately to nearby officers
  • Leave pets at home to avoid stress from crowds and noise

Road Closures and Traffic Disruptions

Significant traffic changes will be in effect across Surrey during the parade weekend.

  • Road closures begin early morning, with full closures from approximately 7:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Major congestion is expected between 72 Avenue and 88 Avenue, and from Scott Road to King George Boulevard

Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time.

Residents within restricted areas must carry valid identification with their current address to access their homes through police checkpoints.

Parking and Access Information

Businesses operating within the parade route will require special parking passes for access. Vehicles will only be allowed into restricted areas before 7:00 a.m., and no access will be permitted during the event itself.

Parking passes will be limited to authorized personnel working within designated zones.

Plan Ahead for a Safe Celebration

With proper planning and cooperation from the public, officials say the event can remain both safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.

The Vaisakhi Parade continues to be a major cultural celebration in Surrey, bringing together communities in a spirit of unity and festivity.
