Vancouver Hotels Seeing Unexpected Vacancies Before FIFA World Cup

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup just weeks away, Vancouver’s hotel industry says bookings are falling short of expectations. The British Columbia Hotel Association claims many travelers were led to believe hotel rooms would be impossible to find during the tournament, causing potential visitors to avoid making plans altogether.

Industry officials say downtown Vancouver hotel occupancy for June is currently pacing below last year’s levels, despite the city preparing to host seven FIFA World Cup matches this summer.

FIFA Room Releases Added Thousands of Available Hotel Spaces

Part of the issue stems from FIFA releasing large blocks of previously reserved hotel rooms back into the public market. The B.C. Hotel Association says between 70 and 80 per cent of FIFA’s hotel room allocations were cancelled or returned across host cities, including Vancouver.

This reportedly added roughly 15,000 nightly hotel rooms back into Vancouver’s inventory between June and July.

Hotel leaders say the move is common for major international events, but the scale of the release surprised many tourism operators.

Tourism Industry Says Public Perception Hurt Demand

According to the hotel association, constant messaging about “sold out hotels” and expensive accommodations may have unintentionally scared visitors away from Vancouver during one of the city’s biggest global events.

Tourism officials now want to shift the conversation by reassuring travelers that:

  • Hotel rooms are still available
  • Vancouver remains open for visitors
  • Last-minute bookings are possible
  • Businesses are prepared for FIFA tourism demand

The association argues that perception plays a major role in tourism and that inaccurate assumptions about shortages can reduce visitor spending across restaurants, attractions, and local businesses.

Concerns Grow Over FIFA’s Economic Impact

When Vancouver was selected as a FIFA host city, officials projected a major economic boost from international tourism and visitor spending. However, slower-than-expected bookings are raising questions about whether those forecasts may have been overly optimistic.

Some travel operators also report slower sales for FIFA-related tourism packages, while concerns about high hotel pricing continue circulating online.

Despite this, tourism organizations say Vancouver is still expected to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors during the tournament period.

Vancouver Still Preparing for Massive World Cup Crowds

Officials continue emphasizing that Vancouver remains one of the stronger-performing host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The city is preparing for major crowds, increased transportation demand, and heightened tourism activity throughout the summer.

Industry leaders now hope clearer messaging and improved communication will encourage more visitors to finalize travel plans before kickoff.
