Police Respond to Suspicious Person Call in Surrey

Surrey Police Service responded to reports of a suspicious individual at a residence in the 12200 block of Southpark Crescent on the evening of May 25.

According to police, officers arrived at the location and encountered a man who allegedly confronted responding officers. During the interaction, officers discharged their service weapons.

Emergency medical treatment was immediately provided at the scene by Surrey police officers and BC Emergency Health Services paramedics before the injured individual was transported to hospital.

Authorities have not released details regarding the extent of the person’s injuries.

Independent Investigations Office Takes Over

Following the incident, Surrey Police Service notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia, commonly known as the IIO BC.

The civilian-led agency is responsible for investigating police-related incidents across the province that result in serious harm or death.

Because the case is now under independent investigation, Surrey police say they will not release additional details while the review remains active.

Investigation Focused on Police Actions

The IIO BC will examine all circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions of responding officers and the events leading up to the shooting.

Investigators are expected to review evidence from the scene, witness accounts, body-worn camera footage if available, and other relevant materials as part of the investigation.

Officials have encouraged anyone with information related to the incident to contact the IIO BC directly.

Community Concerns Around Police Incidents

Officer-involved shootings often draw significant public attention and scrutiny, especially as communities continue discussing police accountability, use-of-force policies, and public safety.

Cases investigated by the IIO BC are reviewed independently from local police agencies to ensure transparency and public confidence in the investigative process.

Residents in Surrey are expected to closely follow updates as more information becomes available.
