Tumbler Ridge Shooting Survivor Maya Gebala Shows Encouraging Recovery Progress

There is a hopeful update in the recovery of 12-year-old Maya Gebala, who was seriously injured in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting earlier this year.

According to her father, Maya has now been moved out of the intensive care unit at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver and into a specialized recovery and rehabilitation unit. The transition marks an important milestone in her healing journey.

Her family says she is beginning to show positive signs of improvement. Maya is reportedly experiencing less pain, regaining energy, and showing visible signs of recovery as her condition stabilizes.

The weeks spent in intensive care were described as emotionally challenging, filled with uncertainty and difficult moments. However, recent progress has brought renewed hope.

One particularly meaningful moment came when Maya was able to sit up with the assistance of hospital therapists. This allowed her father to embrace her again—an emotional experience he described as overwhelming after everything the family has endured.

Maya continues to receive treatment for serious injuries, including a gunshot wound sustained during the February incident. While her recovery is ongoing, her progress so far is being seen as a strong and encouraging step forward.

Her story has touched many across the province, with continued support pouring in for her and her family as she works toward healing.
