Richmond RCMP Increase Road Safety Enforcement
Richmond RCMP have launched a targeted road safety campaign aimed at reducing high-risk driving incidents across the city. The month-long enforcement initiative is part of a province-wide traffic safety effort in partnership with ICBC and the BC Association of Chiefs of Police.
Police say officers will be monitoring drivers for behaviours commonly connected to severe collisions, including excessive speeding, distracted driving, unsafe passing, and impaired driving.
Focus on Motorcycle and Intersection Safety
With warmer weather bringing more motorcycles onto local roads, RCMP are also emphasizing motorcycle awareness and intersection safety. Officers say a significant number of motorcycle crashes occur at intersections when drivers fail to notice riders while turning.
Authorities are encouraging motorists to double-check blind spots, maintain safe following distances, and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
Motorcyclists are also being reminded to wear approved safety gear, obey speed limits, and stay visible in traffic.
High-Collision Areas Under Increased Patrol
Police confirmed that officers will conduct targeted patrols and enforcement operations in several high-traffic and collision-prone areas throughout Richmond. Enforcement teams will focus on drivers engaging in:
- Distracted driving
- Excessive speeding
- Impaired driving
- Illegal vehicle modifications
- Unsafe lane changes and passing
According to RCMP traffic reports, hundreds of traffic violations have already been issued during recent enforcement operations in Richmond.
RCMP Warn About Dangerous Driving Trends
Richmond RCMP say officers continue to observe concerning trends involving dangerous driving behaviour across the city. Recent operations identified drivers travelling far above posted speed limits, using electronic devices while driving, and operating uninsured vehicles.
Police say these types of violations significantly increase the risk of serious injuries and fatal collisions.
Officials also noted that impaired driving enforcement will remain a priority throughout the year as part of ongoing road safety initiatives.
Public Asked to Drive Responsibly
RCMP are urging all road users to help improve safety by slowing down, avoiding distractions, and planning ahead before consuming alcohol or drugs.
The campaign will continue throughout May with additional patrols, roadside checks, and public education efforts across Richmond.
